St Margaret’s Bay: White Cliffs, Big Skies and Quiet Kent at its Best
Tucked between Dover and Deal on the Kent Heritage Coast, St Margaret’s Bay is one of England’s best-kept coastal secrets. Chalk white cliffs, salt air, and a pace of life that slows the moment you arrive – this is a corner of Kent that rewards those who seek it out. Whether you’re here to walk, explore history, or simply breathe, St Margaret’s delivers.
A Quiet Corner With Everything Close
St Margaret’s Bay sits at the foot of the famous white cliffs, just minutes from Dover and a short drive from Deal. Its position on the Channel coast makes it one of the most historically significant, and scenically dramatic, spots in the whole of Kent. It’s a place where you might walk cliff paths in the morning, visit a medieval castle in the afternoon, and be back in time for a sunset that turns the sea gold.
Made for Walkers, History Lovers and Those Who Just Want Space
- The White Cliff Walks: Miles of National Trail clifftop path run directly from St Margaret’s. The stretch towards Kingsdown in one direction and Dover in the other offers some of the most dramatic coastal walking in England. Plus the clifftop between the farm and the lighthouse is one of the finest places to see the spectacular white cliffs wildflowers.
- Dover Castle: One of England’s most iconic fortresses delivering a Roman lighthouse and wartime tunnels cut deep into the chalk.
- South Foreland Lighthouse: A National Trust landmark with a fascinating story – The site of Marconi’s first international radio transmission and the place where Mrs Knott’s tearoom serves tea in bone china cups in a room that hasn’t changed since the 1950s. Worth the walk to it and the climb up it for the views alone.
- St Margaret’s Bay: Sitting in a gap in the White Cliffs between Dover and Kingsdown, the bay is a sheltered, south-facing cove that catches the sun and feels genuinely removed from the world. It is closer to France here than anywhere else in England and offers wild waves in the Winter and flat conditions in the Summer for swimming, paddle boarding or a spot of rock pooling.
